Composite Deck in Bloomingdale, Washington, D.C.
Composite deck in Bloomingdale, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. Behind this modern row of homes, we built a low composite deck that turns a narrow side yard into an outdoor room: two-tone decking laid in a herringbone pattern, a built-in planter with metal privacy screens and steps that connect the deck to the house and the walkway.
Composite decking with a two-tone border
Warm, light composite boards run in long straight lines and change direction into a herringbone section at the back of the deck. Dark composite boards frame the edges as a picture-frame border and separate each section, so the pattern reads clearly and every cut end is hidden.
Built-in planter and privacy screens
Along the fence line, a raised planter box is clad in the same composite as the deck, with dark trim on the corners. On top of it, black laser-cut metal panels with a leaf pattern give the deck privacy from the neighbors while still letting light and air through.
Steps and transitions
A built-in composite step sits outside the large sliding windows, and a two-tone step at the far end leads down to the concrete walkway. The same light and dark boards wrap every step, so the whole deck looks like one piece.
Why composite decking works in DC
Composite decking does not need staining or sealing, resists rot and does not splinter, which makes it a good fit for small urban yards in Washington, DC that get heavy use. Diagonal and herringbone patterns need extra framing underneath, with closer joist spacing and blocking where the boards change direction.
Deck framing and permits in Washington, DC
Decks in DC typically need a building permit from the DC Department of Buildings, especially when they are attached to the house. We prepare the drawings, apply for the permits, build the footings and framing to code and schedule the inspections.
