Covered Composite Deck with Cable Railing in Hillcrest, Washington, D.C.
Covered composite deck in Hillcrest, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. Off the back of this home, we built a large covered deck with composite decking, black cable railing, white columns and a finished ceiling with recessed lights, so the family can use it rain or shine.
Covered deck with a finished ceiling
A roof extends over the deck on white columns with paneled bases. The ceiling is finished in white with recessed lights, and an outdoor TV is mounted on the siding, turning the deck into an outdoor living room.
Composite decking with a breaker board
Warm brown composite boards run the length of the deck, with a contrasting breaker board across the middle where the boards meet, so there are no butt joints in the field. A dark board finishes the outer edge.
Black cable railing
Black aluminum posts and top rails hold thin stainless steel cables, which keep the deck safe without blocking the view of the trees and the backyard. Cable railing needs strong posts and blocking in the framing to hold the cable tension.
Electrical for an outdoor living space
The recessed lights, the TV and the outdoor outlets are wired on their own circuits, with weather-resistant, GFCI-protected outlets and fixtures rated for damp locations under the roof.
Footings, framing and permits in Washington, DC
A covered deck carries the weight of a roof as well as the people on it, so the footings, beams and connection to the house have to be sized for that load. Decks like this one typically need building permits from the DC Department of Buildings; we prepare the drawings, apply for the permits and schedule the inspections.
