Freestanding Bathtub Remodel in Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.

Freestanding bathtub remodel in Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. We built this tub wall around a matte white freestanding tub: a fluted tile accent wall with a lit niche, large-format stone-look tile and a matte black floor-mounted tub filler.

Bathtub replacement with a freestanding tub

The oval freestanding tub has a smooth matte finish that reads like stone. A floor-mounted matte black filler with knurled controls and a handheld shower stands beside it, fed from below the floor, so nothing is mounted on the tile wall.

Fluted tile accent wall with an LED niche

Behind the tub, a fluted 3D tile wall in warm gray holds a long recessed niche framed in matte black trim and lit with LED. Hidden LED lines along both edges of the accent wall wash light over the stone-look tile on either side, so this Cleveland Park bathroom glows at night.

Large-format stone-look tile installation

Large-format gray stone-look tile covers the floor and the side walls. Big tiles mean fewer grout lines and a calmer look, but they need a flat, solid floor and walls, so the substrate is checked and leveled before the tile is set.

Plumbing, electrical and permits in Washington, DC

A freestanding tub needs its drain and the filler supply lines placed exactly in the floor before any tile goes in, and the LED niche and accent lighting need new wiring and drivers hidden behind the walls. Bathroom remodels in DC that change plumbing or add electrical work typically need permits from the DC Department of Buildings; we prepare the drawings, apply for the permits and schedule the inspections.
