Open-Concept Kitchen Remodel in Barnaby Woods, Washington, D.C.

Open-concept kitchen remodel in Barnaby Woods, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. We opened this kitchen to the family room and the dining area, then built it out with white shaker cabinets, a large quartz island and brass lantern pendants, so the whole main floor reads as one bright space.

White shaker kitchen cabinets and a paneled range hood

White shaker cabinets run to the ceiling, with brushed nickel square knobs and bar pulls. A paneled range hood is built into the upper cabinets over the cooktop, and LED strips under the wall cabinets light the countertops.

Quartz countertops, island and backsplash

White quartz with gray veining covers the perimeter counters, the full-height backsplash and the large island, which seats four and holds a workstation sink and the dishwasher. Outlets are set into the backsplash so the counters stay clear.

Induction cooktop, double wall ovens and stainless appliances

A flush induction cooktop, a stainless double wall oven set into tall cabinetry and a stainless French door refrigerator give this Barnaby Woods kitchen plenty of cooking capacity in a clean, simple layout.

Open floor plan, lighting and flooring

With the kitchen open to the living spaces, two brass and glass lantern pendants over the island and a matching chandelier over the dining table tie the rooms together. Recessed lights run through the kitchen and family room, and light wood-look flooring continues across the whole floor.

Walls, electrical and permits in Washington, DC

Opening a kitchen to the family room often means removing or changing walls, so we check for load-bearing walls and plan any beams before demolition. The electrical work covers the induction cooktop and wall ovens, the pendants, the recessed lights and GFCI-protected outlets. Kitchen remodels in DC that change walls or add electrical work typically need permits from the DC Department of Buildings; we prepare the drawings, apply for the permits and schedule the inspections.
