Walk-In Shower Remodel in Brookland, Washington, D.C.

Walk-in shower remodel in Brookland, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. Under a sloped ceiling and a skylight on the top floor of this Northeast DC home, we remodeled the whole bathroom: a custom walk-in shower with marble-look tile, a black and white mosaic floor and frameless glass, a gray double vanity and matte black fixtures.

Custom shower installation under a sloped ceiling

Fitting a shower under a roofline takes planning: the glass, the shower head and the tile layout all have to work with the slope. We kept the glass enclosure below the slope, set the rain shower head on a wall arm where there is full headroom, and built a tiled bench into the corner under the low side of the ceiling.

Bathroom tile installation: marble-look walls and a mosaic floor

Large marble-look tile runs from the curb to the ceiling in an offset pattern. The shower floor is a black and white geometric mosaic sloped to a center drain, and the same mosaic lines the recessed niche, framed in black trim to match the fixtures. The tiled bench and two corner shelves keep everything within reach.

Matte black fixtures and frameless glass

The shower and bath fixtures are matte black: the square rain shower head, the handheld shower and its control, the door pull, the glass hinges and clamps, the vanity faucets, the towel bar and the robe hook. The frameless glass lets light from the skylight and the double-hung window reach the whole bathroom, and light gray large-format floor tile and white trim keep the room bright.

Double vanity, mirror and vanity lighting

Across from the shower, a gray shaker double vanity with brushed brass pulls holds two undermount sinks in a white Carrara-look countertop with a matching backsplash. A wide black-framed mirror spans both sinks under a four-light fixture with white glass shades, a classic look that suits a Brookland home.

Plumbing, waterproofing and permits in Washington, DC

Behind the tile, a shower like this needs new supply lines for the rain head and handheld shower, a vented drain and a waterproofed, sloped shower base, plus supply and drain lines for the double vanity. A bathroom remodel in DC also covers the electrical side: GFCI-protected outlets at the vanity, the vanity light and an exhaust fan to control moisture. Remodels that change plumbing or electrical typically need permits from the DC Department of Buildings; we prepare the drawings and plans, apply for the permits and schedule the inspections.
