Double shower before and after in Columbia Heights, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. During construction, the shower was open framing with new PEX water lines for two valves. Finished, it is a double shower with white subway tile, a black hexagon floor and a glass enclosure between two vanities.

During: framing and plumbing for two showers

We framed and insulated the back wall, built a half wall on each side, and ran new PEX supply lines to two shower valves, each set at its own height. Moisture-resistant drywall went up around the room before the shower was waterproofed.

After: a double shower with subway tile

White subway tile now runs to the ceiling, black hexagon tile covers the shower floor and the bathroom floor, and the shower has two ceiling-mounted rain heads, two wall heads, a handheld shower and matte black controls behind a glass enclosure.

Why the rough-in matters

In a double shower, most of the work is hidden: valve heights, blocking for the glass and grab points, drain placement and waterproofing all have to be right before the tile goes up, because they cannot be changed afterward.
