Custom kitchen in a new home in Forest Hills, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. We built this kitchen as part of a new home, from the framing of the great room to the finished space: stained oak cabinets, a quartzite waterfall island, a curved plaster range hood and a row of enamel pendants under tall ceilings and clerestory windows. From framing to a finished kitchen

The kitchen started as open framing, with tall walls, roof trusses and the openings for the clerestory windows. During rough-in, the walls were filled with new wiring, plumbing and ductwork, and the homeowners compared stained cabinet door samples right against the framing before choosing the finish. Then came the drywall, the plaster hood, the cabinets, the island and the countertops.

Custom stained oak kitchen cabinets

Shaker cabinets in a warm stained oak line the cooking wall and a full wall of tall cabinets across the room, with an open niche for display. Under-cabinet LED lighting brightens the counters, and toe-kick LED lighting under the base cabinets gives the kitchen a soft glow at night.

Quartzite waterfall island

The island is topped with taupe quartzite with soft veining and a thick mitered edge that drops to the floor on one end. It holds an undermount sink, and its long side is paneled in light oak with a built-in outlet for small appliances.

Plaster range hood, clerestory windows and pendants

A curved plaster range hood is the centerpiece of the cooking wall, set between the tall cabinets. Above it, three clerestory windows bring daylight deep into the room, and four white enamel pendants hang from long brass chains over the island.

Plans, permits and inspections for a new home in DC

A new home in Washington, DC goes through the DC Department of Buildings, with inspections at stages such as framing, rough-in and final. We work from the drawings and plans, coordinate the framing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC, and schedule each inspection so the kitchen finishes go in on a sound, approved structure.
