Kitchen Remodel in Takoma, Washington, D.C.

Kitchen remodel in Takoma, Washington, D.C. by H&C Contractors Inc. We turned a dated kitchen with oak cabinets, granite countertops, stained wood trim, a single ceiling light and wood-look vinyl flooring into a bright white kitchen with quartz counters, recessed lighting and oak hardwood floors, opening onto the backyard deck through French doors. See the before and after photos.

From a dated oak kitchen to a bright white kitchen

The old oak cabinets and speckled granite came out, along with the dark trim. In their place, white cabinets, white trim and six-panel doors, soft gray walls and light quartz make the room feel larger and brighter, while the oak floors keep it warm.

Custom kitchen cabinets with raised panels

White raised-panel cabinets with matte black pulls wrap the kitchen in a U shape, with a peninsula that seats guests on the dining side. Upper cabinets run to the ceiling, a tall pantry cabinet stands beside the French doors, and the refrigerator is framed by cabinetry.

Quartz countertops and backsplash

Marble-look quartz with soft gray veining covers the counters and the peninsula and runs up the wall to the cabinets as a backsplash, with outlets set neatly into the stone. A dark undermount sink sits under the window, next to a stainless dishwasher.

French doors, recessed lighting and oak floors

French patio doors with black hardware open from the kitchen to the deck and the yard. Recessed lights replace the single ceiling fixture, LED strips under the wall cabinets light the counters, and new oak hardwood floors run through the kitchen with a natural finish.

Plumbing, electrical and permits in Washington, DC

A remodel like this one covers new circuits for the range, the microwave and the lighting, GFCI-protected countertop outlets, and the plumbing for the sink and dishwasher. New exterior doors can also mean changes to the framing and a new header in the wall. Kitchen remodels in DC that move plumbing or add electrical work typically need permits from the DC Department of Buildings; we prepare the drawings, apply for the permits and schedule the inspections.
